Research Associate / Engineer (f/m) specializing in Grid Simulation and Grid Control

The Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology IWES Northwest covers applied research and development for the complete wind-power value chain. Its particular strength lies in the combination of a worldwide unique test infrastructure with extensive expertise in reliability and validation. What we expect from you

You possess a degree in Electrical Engineering (Bachelor/Master) and have in-depth knowledge of inverter systems and their control as well as of medium-voltage grids. Ideally, you have gained initial professional experience in the development and commissioning of inverter systems and have pursued these issues academically. Experience in the wind energy sector rounds off your profile. A good command of common simulation tools such as MATLAB / SimPowerSystems or Plecs is expected.

Since Fraunhofer IWES Northwest performs a variety of duties at an international level, excellent English and German skills are a prerequisite. Your strengths include the ability to work independently as well as a keen sense of commitment, good organization, creativity and an interdisciplinary approach. Flexibility and good communication skills round off your profile. You feel passionate about applied research, wind energy and new ideas and are interested in working in an interdisciplinary team.

What you can expect from us

IWES operates, among other things, large-scale test rigs for the wind sector. Within the scope of a new research project, a new test rig for testing generator inverter systems is to be planned, designed, and constructed in order to measure the electrical properties of wind turbines. The aim of this is to shorten the certification process for wind turbines significantly.

Your duties comprise working independently on research projects as well as contract research projects involving close cooperation with our industry and research partners and, in particular, the integration of medium voltage systems and further development of a 44 MVA artificial mains network.
