Virtual reality applications make spectators to feel being part of the scene. Computer generated models that can be viewed from different positions and distances permit the spectator to interact with its virtual surroundings. However, creation of these models is laborious while still not achieving a natural look.
Circumventing these limitations is possible by means of lightfields. Captured by an array of cameras, they depict the scene from different viewpoints. Consequently, the image presented to the spectator can be adapted in accordance with his position and distance.
The proposed internship targets the creation of algorithms in Matlab and C++ that enable such an application. Based on an existing lightfield processing chain, novel concepts for acquisition, processing and rendering should be evaluated. Special focus will be put on the achievable image quality and processing speed while ensuring a high degree of freedom for the position and view point of the spectator.
