Bachelor’s/Master’s Thesis "Design and Implementation of Decimation Filter for Sigma-Delta Analog to Digital Converters"

Fraunhofer EMFT conducts cutting-edge applied research on sensors and actuators for people and the environment. The working principle of sigma-delta ADCs involves oversampling the input analog signal and shaping a significant amount of the quantization noise out of the targeted bandwidth towards higher frequencies. The sampled and quantized data is then processed by a digital-filter to remove the high-frequency noise (low-pass filtering) and to slow down the output data rate (decimation).

This Bachelor’s/Master’s thesis focuses on the design of such a digital-decimation filter for a 3rd order sigma-delta ADC and its implementation on an FPGA development board. Depending on the progress of the work within the stipulated time-period of 6 months, the synthesis and layout of the designed filter in 22 nm Fully Depleted Silicon on Insulator CMOS process is also envisioned.

Your Tasks are:

  • Study of the existing decimation filter architectures employed in sigma-delta ADCs
  • Modelling of different architectures in Python
  • Implementation of the digital filter on FPGA using Verilog
  • Synthesis and Layout in 22 nm Fully Depleted Silicon on Insulator CMOS process
  • Documentation

What we expect from you

  • Study of electronic engineering or comparable studies
  • Good programming skills in Python, and Verilog/VHDL
  • Good experience in FPGA design and simulation
  • Experience with MATLAB will be considered as an advantage
  • Good English writing skills
