Interested in working on interdisciplinary questions at the interface of software development and licensing law?
We might just have the job for you!
These days, more and more technologies and software products draw on elements of both open source and third-party software. Examples of open source software (OSS) include FFmpeg and libxml2, while Qt and ASIO are typical examples of third-party software.
In both cases, using the technology brings with it its own legal obligations - which is why it must be tested, approved, and documented whenever it is employed in specific technologies and software solutions. OSS compliance, as it is known, requires a knowledge both of technology and the law.
As OSS Compliance Manager, you will act as the first point of contact for any questions relating to open source and third-party software within the Audio and Media Technologies department (AME), ensuring that developer teams are employing such technology correctly and appropriately. Together with Fraunhofer headquarters, and in close consultation with the AME management team, you will implement a transparent OSS compliance process that provides a binding framework governing the use of OSS and third-party software. You will be responsible for testing, evaluating, and selecting software tools to support the OSS compliance process, and for putting these into operation. You will also process and document inquiries submitted by developers on specific issues relating to OSS and third-party software, liaising with the legal team at headquarters and, if necessary, external advisors to clear up any queries they might have. In this, you will be supported by the contracts team. Together with the developer teams, you will also be responsible for checking that legal requirements have been respected prior to software delivery, as well as delivering training sessions.
What we expect from you
- A degree in Engineering, Business Informatics or Business Law closely related to software development
- Experience in programming and software development (e.g. C/C++, GCC, gmake, SVN/Git)
- Experience of OSS projects, preferably as an active developer (e.g. on SourceForge or GitHub)
- Experience with OSS licensing and its use in commercial projects (e.g. GPL, LGPL, MIT, BSD, Apache ...), as well as knowledge of the legal framework
What you can expect from usVaried and stimulating work in a committed team. The opportunity to contribute your own ideas and shape new concepts. Regular training and flexible, family-friendly work schedules. A state-of-the art workplace in a modern, bright office, shared with a maximum of two other people.
