The Broadband & Broadcast (BB) department is active in the areas of mobile communications, satellite communications, Internet-of-Things and automotive communication systems. We take new concepts and algorithms from theory, implement them and test them in simulations and in prototypes in our labs and in the field. For instance, we operated a LTE-Advanced network with commercial equipment, which we use to check the interoperability of our prototypes with the LTE standard. Currently, we are developing a 5G New Radio Testbed with base-station (gNB) and user equipment (UE) for advanced research topics. In short, the BB department establishes a bridge between communication theory and its employment in practice.
As our group is striving to implement 5G NR high performance testbeds, design efforts are focusing on the compliancy with the latest radio access network (RAN) interface standards in order to achieve smooth integration with third-party hardware and software units (e.g. multi radio access technology and multi-vendor applications). To this purpose, we are currently looking for a student to support the definition, design and development of application programming interfaces (APIs) compliant to higher layer 5G RAN functional split between central and distributed units (e.g. as defined in 3GPP TR 38.801, 3GPP TS 38.401, O-RAN https://www.o-ran.org/). The work will be the baseline for implementing advanced low latency 5G testbeds built around software defined radio (SDR) platforms running open source implementation of 3GPP standards (OpenAirInterface, https://www.openairinterface.org/).
