PhD Student: CMOS Circuit Design for AI Systems

The Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems (IMS), as part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, is one of the leading electronics research institutes in Europe. The ASIC department undertakes advanced research into design of analogue and mixed signal circuits for a range of applications.

To accomplish this, we are now seeking up to three new scientists to join us in developing the next generation of circuits for Artificial Intelligent Systems in a chip. Software-based AI systems have led to a new revolution in our lives. However, these systems still utilise classical electronic hardware and often require large data-centers or GPUs. We aim to reduce these large and power-consuming systems on a micro-chip by suitable circuit design. More importantly, we aim to integrate these on-chip AI systems with advanced sensors for a range of medical, environmental and industrial applications.

Your tasks:

  • Research and implementation of novel circuits or memories for intelligent systems
  • Simulation, layout and test of the manufactured systems
  • Presentation of results at international conferences and workshop
  • Reporting and support in the acquisition of new projects

Was Sie mitbringen

  • A Master’s degree or a University Diploma in Electronics/Electrical Engineering/Informatics or Physics
  • Experience of or interest in CMOS VLSI Design
  • Programming experience in one or more of VHDL/Verilog/MATLAB/C/C++/Python
  • Education in modules of microelectronics and semiconductor physics
  • Desirable to have experience/training of using a circuit design tool 
  • Good communication skills in English
  • Ambition for research and thirst of knowledge
  • Ability to work independently as well as in multidisciplinary teams

    Within 3 years, we offer you the opportunity for a successful doctorate and provide you with all facilities and laboratories of our institute. The doctoral degree is awarded by the University of Siegen. Teaching commitments are not transferred to you. This is a full-time job (39h / week) with half payment.
