PHD THESIS: DATA TRANSMISSION METHODS FOR HIGH-SPEED DATA COMMUNICATION USING LI-FI

Due to the increasing amount of transmitted data, radio-based wireless communication is reaching its limits more and more. In addition to the so-called "frequency crunch" aspect, which describes the limited bandwidth availability of wireless systems, implementation costs increase exponentially with rising transmission frequency. Under the name Li-Fi (Light Fidelity), light-based wireless communication is therefore experiencing a renaissance, especially due to the high possible data rates, comparatively low manufacturing costs and the possibility of real-time communication.
We develop Li-Fi communication solutions in flexible, interdisciplinary teams, together with our partners and customers from industry, which are working worldwide in a large variety of markets such as consumer, energy, factory automation, infrastructure of buildings, life science, logistics, mechanical engineering or mobility.
For our team we are looking for a bright mind to to support us in the design and implementation of Li-Fi specific communication protocols.

Your tasks include

  • Familiarize with optical wireless data communications and systems theory
  • Independent research and development of communication protocols and data coding methods for Li-Fi networks
  • Design and implementation of the developed methods on FPGAs
  • Design of test tracks and analysis of the concepts under operational conditions
  • Evaluation, documentation and publication of research results

What we expect from you


  • Completed scientific university studies (diploma/master´s degree) in communications engineering, electrical engineering or in a comparable field of study
  • Experience in the area of data communication, signal coding methods and network protocols
  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken German and English
  • Independent, self-initiated and quality-oriented way of working
  • First knowledge of Verilog would be a plus

The position is limited for 3 years.

The doctorate is awarded over a German partner university according to the higher education laws of the respective federal state. Scientific work is scheduled to be carried out at the business unit Wireless Microsystems at the Fraunhofer IPMS in Dresden.
