PHD THESIS: Quantum Communication

We are on the edge of an age in which the subatomic effects of the quantum level will be used to create solutions that will seem like magic to the macroscopic world in which we currently live and think. Quantum computers will solve in minutes computer operations that previously would have taken thousands of years; quantum encryption methods will render messages useless as soon as they are intercepted; and quantum clocks will redefine time itself in a way that makes even an atomic clock look like an ancient sundial by comparison.

For more than 20 years, we have been developing light-based communication systems in flexible interdisciplinary teams together with our partners and customers from industry, which are working worldwide in a large variety of markets such as consumer, energy, factory automation, infrastructure of buildings, life science, logistics, mechanical engineering or mobility.

For our team we are looking for a bright mind to help us explore, design and implement innovative quantum communication solutions in this new era.

Your tasks include:

  • Familiarization with the theory of quantum effects and quantum mechanics
  • Independent research and development of models and theories for data transmission, based on the active principle of the quantum level
  • Design and implementation of experimental setups and analysis of the concepts under laboratory conditions
  • Evaluation, documentation and publication of research results

What we expect from you


  • Completed scientific university studies (diploma/master´s degree) in physics, natural sciences, electrical engineering or in a comparable field of studies
  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken German and English
  • Independent, self-initiated and quality-oriented way of working

Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.
The position is limited for 3 years.

The doctorate is awarded over a German partner university according to the higher education laws of the respective federal state. Scientific work is scheduled to be carried out at the business unit Wireless Microsystems at the Fraunhofer IPMS in Dresden.
