Student assistant* «Interactive mesh picking and texture assignment«

Every manufactured product requires an inspection to satisfy quality assurance. Automated inspection requires a plan tailored for a particular product. To catch up with advanced customization and automated product manufacturing introduced in Industry 4.0, it is required to enhance and automate inspection planning. Exactly this kind of research is done in the Inspection planning group, where the main focus is the development of automated surface inspection planning.
The development of automated surface inspection planning greatly beneits from automated, computer-generated images of the product for which the inspection is planned. Generated images must depict the product as similar as possible to the real product (i.e. be representative). To generate representative images of the product it is required to construct a 3D scene that simulates the inspection environment and to render that scene. The 3D scene is constructed by a physically-based description of inspected product geometry and its material, illumination and camera used in a real inspection environment. Images of that
scene are obtained by using a physically based, global-illumination rendering engine.
In order to generate representative images, it is required to aim for realism. One of the most important characteristics of synthesized image realism lies in the simulation of the inspected object texture. Texture determines both the geometrical and substance properties of the surface. Which, in turn, deines how the object appears. Real-life textures are present on a wide range of scales and patterns which yield a particular appearance of the surface. Therefore, to achieve the realism of synthesized images, needed for surface inspection planning, it is required to develop textures with the aforementioned characteristics. Once the texture is developed it must be applied to the 3D object. Both texture development and texture application must be done in an automated manner to satisfy the requirements of automated surface inspection planning which opens a new set of problems that must be tackled.

Products often have multiple and different materials and textures per surface. While describing an inspected object in a 3D scene, it is required that different parts of the object can be selected and assigned with different material and texture properties on selected parts.

What would you be working on:

  • Appleseed is an open-source, physically-based, global-illumination, production-ready rendering engine which uses physically-based light transport (i.e. path tracing) and shading (i.e. microfacet reection models). More information about the software:
  • Callistemon is a bridge between Appleseed rendering engine and inspection planning environment description. It is used for simulating the inspection environment in a 3D scene and rendering images of the constructed scene. This software is developed by the Inspection planning group.
  • V-POI (Viewpoint of Interest) is a web platform enabling virtual inspection planning and interactive acquisition setup con guration. This software is developed by the Inspection planning group.

An example of tasks you would be working on:
• Investigating and incorporating mesh processing tools for interactive mesh primitive picking and primitive grouping
• Investigating and extending Appleseed API for assigning texture and material to selected primitives
