To start on as soon as possible our division “Energy Systems and Energy Economics “ is looking for a student for a
bachelor´s thesis/master´s thesis on the topic of Numerical Optimization of the energy system model REMod

What you can expect
Due to climate change and carbon reduction goals in EU and Germany, we at Fraunhofer ISE in the Group “Energy Systems and Energy Economics” do research in the field of CO2-reduction in the German energy system. The model used is called “REMod” (regenerative energy model), representing the German energy system with a simulative bottom-up approach. Until today, the development of transformation paths for an emission reduced energy system has been developed applying black box model optimization algorithms as the particle swarm optimization and covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy. Due to regular model extensions, REMod has become a strong tool for energy system analysis, though the increasing complexity also leads to longer optimization calculations with an increase of optimized variables. To reduce calculation time and improve the results, we are motivated to evaluate the application of other optimization methods on our model. The topic of this master thesis will be to evaluate the potential of applying the numerical optimization approach on REMod, by classifying the model and applying numerical optimization algorithms.
The academic supervisor will be professor Moritz Diehl.


Your duties include
  • Characterize the model mathematically
  • Develop hessian approximation concepts and an optimization method and implement them in Python
  • Analyse and interpret the results
  • Compare with the current algorithm optimization method (CMAes)

What you have to offer
  • Student enrolled in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or Natural Science 
  • Prerequisites are to have passed the class Numerical Optimization and have passed or be attending Numerical Optimal Control at IMTEK, Faculty of Engineering, University of Freiburg
  • Ability to work in a team

  • Self-driven
  • Good knowledge of MS office
  • Good Python skills
  • Strong written and spoken English
  • German skills are an advantage
