Although surgery guidance systems have the potential to increase therapy effectiveness and manage complexity in modern surgical care, established technologies are limited to solving very specific problems and often induce considerable technical overhead. Fraunhofer MEVIS and the Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality Research Lab (CGVR) at University of Bremen have joined forces to mitigate the drawbacks of today's tracking systems by developing a multi-camera machine vision tracking system aware of the complete therapy situation including the phase of the procedure and the location of instruments and devices used.

The Ph.D. student position at Fraunhofer MEVIS is designated to developing a multi-camera system for the OR and therapy phase estimation. A second Ph.D. student position at CGVR will focus on object detection and pose estimation within the multicamera video streams. Close collaboration is anticipated here.

What we expect from you

  • an above average Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or an adjacent field
  • experience in the field of computer vision or modeling and simulation
  • solid skills in software development in Python, C++ or other similar programming languages
  • high self-motivation with the ability to work independently and in a team with other Ph.D. students
  • very good English and good German language skills

The weekly working time is 39 hours. The full-time position with half pay allows 50% of your working time for your doctorate and 50% for the collaboration in the research project as a research assistant.
The position is initially limited to 3 years.
